Callaway Golf has signed PGA Tour player Phil Mickelson to play its golf clubs and balls. Mickelson, who will wear the company’s logo on his shirt sleeve and visor, and display it on his bag, will also wear Callaway footwear and golf gloves (Callaway). USA TODAY’s Tom Spousta reports the Callaway contract is “believed to be for seven years” and worth $7-10M annually (USA TODAY, 9/8). In L.A., Thomas Bonk notes the deal, which he reports at six years, was announced “just one day after Mickelson officially ended his association with Titleist, which released him from the final 16 months of his five-year contract” (L.A. TIMES, 9/8). In San Diego, Jennifer Davies notes Titleist reportedly refused to increase Mickelson’s $4M per year deal (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 9/8). The AP’s Doug Ferguson noted Mickelson “took some heat from Titleist last year over a phone call to a Callaway representative who had helped his brother with some equipment.” During the call, Mickelson “praised Callaway for its golf ball and driver, and Callaway officials were said to have played the voice mail for its salesmen at a national meeting” (AP, 9/7).
