“Your ad here”: State inks highway sponsorship
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – New signs popping up on Ohio Interstates are part of a sponsorship deal entered into by the state with a major insurance company.
The new Safety Patrol Coverage Area signs that can be seen along Interstate 75 around Dayton stem from an agreement with State Farm.
The insurance company is sponsoring ODOT’s safety patrol. In the Dayton area, that safety patrol includes three vans that do things like help stranded motorists.
Soon the vans will have State Farm ads on them just like the signs do.
As part of the deal the state is getting $875,000 a year.
ODOT spokesperson Steve Faulkner says the money will be used to fund highway construction projects.
He says if sponsorships are something that can be used to generate revenue then the state should be considering them.
He tells us ODOT is looking into the possibility of more deals to sponsor things like rest areas or even bridge naming rights.
The signs will also be put up in Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo and the Akron/Canton areas.
