The Great Alaska Shootout (originally known as the Sea Wolf Classic) is an annual college basketball tournament in Anchorage, Alaska that features colleges from all over the United States. The University of Alaska Anchorage hosts the tournament every Thanksgiving. Tournament games are played at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage. Prior to the Sullivan Arena opening in 1983, games were played at Buckner Fieldhouse. The men's tournament, held annually since 1978, includes eight teams while the women's tournament, held annually since 1980, has four participants. read more

GCI partners with Great Alaska Shootout Estimated read time 1m 8s GCI announces title sponsorship of Great Alaska Shootout By Shannon Ballard 1:48 PM April 9, 2014 ANCHORAGE – Telecommunications giant GCI announced a new, multi-year partnership with a longstanding Alaska basketball tournament Wednesday.Once sponsored by Carrs-Safeway, the event now officially becomes the GCI Great Alaska Shootout.“Our goal is to have the GCI Shootout once again be the most sought-after, sold-out event in the state,” said Paul Landes, GCI’s senior vice president and general manager.GCI did not name a dollar amount for the sponsorship, and said only that its investment is significant in terms of both cash and promotion of the event.“GCI becoming a partner with us in this event will restore energy and visibility, not just to the community but to the state of Alaska,” said University of Anchorage Athletic Director Keith Hackett.GCI said it intends to expand promotion of the event through its 40 retail locations statewide, along with a number of other measures.The Great Alaska Shootout is entering its 38th year, and consistently attracts top-caliber collegiate teams from across the United States.The first GCI Great Alaska Shootout will take place Nov. 25-29 at the Alaska Airlines Center, which is set to open this summer.GCI intends to air tournament games throughout Alaska, it said, with broadcast details still to come.
