Held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, The TD James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival, co-presented with WBGO Jazz88.3 FM, features two star-studded Prudential Hall concerts: For Love of Moody: A Jazz Celebration (Oct. 19) featuring jazz icons George Benson, The Manhattan Transfer, David Sanborn and others, and Miles Davis and Gil Evans: Still Ahead (Oct. 20), an all-star recreation of the landmark original Gil Evans arrangements of the classic Miles Davis recordings of Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain, and Miles Ahead featuring trumpeters Terence Blanchard and Sean Jones and others. The festival also includes the world premiere of Magic Tree House: A Night in New Orleans, based on a book in the phenomenally popular Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne, the debut of Dorthaan’s Place, an ongoing jazz brunch named after “Newark’s First Lady of Jazz,” Dorthaan Kirk, the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, and concerts and events throughout the Newark community.
