Nippon' project to support Japanese earthquake victimsOAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics announced today a partnership with Kura Corporation Ltd., which operates theKura Sushi Restaurant chain, in launching the "Gambaro! Nippon" ("We can do it, Japan!") project to support Great East Japan Earthquake victims.Through this sponsorship, Kura Sushi will sponsor the press backdrop for A's designated hitter/outfielder Hideki Matsui'smedia session following every A's regular season game -- home and away -- to promote a message of hope for baseballfans in Japan. The banner will read "Gambaro! Nippon," which means "We can do it, Japan!") and will feature Oakland A's and Kura Sushi logos. This message will also be reinforced through the backstop rotational signage at select A's home games and a special video board message by Matsui during the A's Opening Series vs. Seattle, April 1-3.Kura Sushi will be supporting the "Gambaro! Nippon" relief efforts through monetary donations of 100 million yen (approximately $1.22 million) by Kura Corporation and 10 million yen (approximately $122,000) by Kura Corporation President Kunihiko Tanaka. In addition, Kura Sushi continues to collect funds at store locations throughout Japan and is making food donations to the affected areas.The Oakland A's will host a benefit game in support of the Japanese earthquake victims on Sunday, April 3, when they play the Seattle Mariners at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The A's will donate $1 for every ticket sold to that game to the Red Cross and will feature many fund-raising components to support the Japanese relief efforts. This game, which will showcase Japan's two greatest modern-day players in Oakland's Matsui and Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki, is also Japanese Heritage Day, featuring pregame ceremonies and entertainment.
