NYC Marathon Sets The Pace With Subway-Sponsored App

Starting today, The Official ING New York City Marathon Spectator Mobile App Presented by Subway will be available for download at the iTunes App Store and Android Market. The app, which allows anyone to follow up to 10 runners simultaneously, provides several New York City Marathon sponsors like Subway, access to a much broader audience than just the actual runners taking part in the annual event.

Ken Winnell, head of digital technology for the New York Road Runners, told the New York Times that about 100,000 people are expected to download the app before next weekend's race, which is twice as many as in 2010. Winnell says usage of the app will be boosted by the wider adoption of iPhones and iPads over the past year.

Here are a few of the other things you can do with the app:

- Watch live streaming of the men’s and women’s pro races, as well as NBC4 New York’s live coverage

- Extensive NYC listing guide from MyCityWay featuring popular restaurant, attraction and retail listings

- Get tourist information, special offers from our partners, and more with the interactive course map

- Let everyone know you’re a fan—the Official ING New York City Marathon Mobile Spectator App Presented by Subway is fully integrated with social media

While Subway will be presenting sponsor, fifteen out of the marathon’s other 30 partners will be included in the app with branding and offers according to Mobile Marketer. Many of the offers within the app will be location-based, such as pointing out where on the course Poland Spring and Gatorade hydration spots reside.

There's even something for the crowds lining First Avenue, as a promoted section by Coors Light, will highlight bars and restaurants serving up libations throughout the race.

The coolest feature though is the GPS tracking. Runners that open the app and select “track” mode can transmit their exact location to everyone who’s tracking them without fumbling with their phone. No texting or calling necessary.
