Royal Bank of Canada Close To Taking Heritage Title?

Despite a great weekend of golf at The Heritage, PGA Tour and tournament officials have made no secret of the fact that without a title sponsor to replace Verizon, the Hilton Head fixture is in serious jeopardy for 2012. Throughout the weekend, the rumored front runners were said to be AFLAC and The Royal Bank of Canada. Now comes word that a deal with RBC is imminent.

Golf Digest ran a report earlier today citing sources that say the Royal Bank of Canada will soon announce a four year title sponsorship with The Heritage.

The report of an imminent deal, however, was news to Tournament Director Steve Wilmot, who categorically denied an RBC deal.

“It’s not true," he told the Hilton Head Island-Packet. “It’s hurting us because we’re engaged with so many companies. We’re not in negotiations with any of them.”

Verizon was the last title sponsor of the Heritage, but chose not to renew its deal beyond 2010, in September of 2009. The tournament has been actively searching for a title sponsor since that time.
