TD Bank, N.A., is a bank holding company in the United States that offers banking, insurance, brokerage, and investment banking services in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The bank is a successor to the Portland Savings Bank, which started in Portland, Maine, in 1852, and later became Banknorth. The bank took its current name—TD Bank, N.A.—in 2008, through the acquisition and re-naming of Commerce Bank and its subsequent merger with TD Banknorth, resulting in co-headquarters in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and Portland, Maine. The acquisition of the South Financial Group expanded TD's footprint to include North Carolina, South Carolina and Mercantile Bank branches in Florida. The company is a part of Toronto-Dominion Bank, which operates as TD Bank Financial Group and is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The bank's "TD" initials, first popularized in Canada, are used officially for all American operations. The bank embraces a retail approach to banking. The College's 20 varsity sports teams participate in the NCAA Division I Southern Conference and are known as the Cougars. The Cougars compete at a variety of athletic facilities in Charleston, including the Carolina First Arena, the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex, Patriots Point Athletic Complex, the Stern Center Pool and the Links at Stono Ferry. College of Charleston Athletics are supported by the Cougar Club, which was established in 1974. During the 1970-71 school year, College of Charleston students voted to change the school mascot from the Maroons to the Cougars, in honor of a cougar that had recently arrived at the Charles Towne Landing zoo. Clyde the Cougar is the College's current mascot.
