Environment
Envirothon is an exciting, fun way for students to learn about the environment. It's a competitive, problem solving natural resource event for high school students intended to challenge the students about the environment. The objectives are threefold: (1) to test the environmental knowledge and understanding of high school students regarding natural resource issues: (2) to cultivate within students to consider careers in environmental fields: (3) students learn about team building and enhance their communications skills. It combines in-class curriculum with hands-on field experiences, while demonstrating the role people have in important environmental issues, such as forestry and wildlife management, water quality, and soil erosion. Teams use group oriented problem-solving skills and hands-on field experience while completing the 5 outdoor labs and testing. The Northeastern Illinois Envirothon brings together students, teachers, state & federal agencies and a variety of local resource professionals from Cook, Lake, McHenry, Winnebago, Boone, DeKalb, DuPage, Kane and Will Counties. This regional event leads into a state and an international competition. Local competitions are organized, staffed and funded by the local Soil & Water Conservation Districts.
