Tournament/League
Words with REAL Friends! That’s the motto this year, as The Arc of Monmouth gears up for its second annual SCRABBLE by the SEA, on Saturday, September 29, 9:30 a.m. at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel in Asbury Park. The event features divisions for all ages and skill levels, and raises funds for The Arc’s 1,400 individuals with Down syndrome, Autism and other intellectual disabilities.

Moderating the event is Jason Keller of Highland Park, whose recent 9-day winning streak on Jeopardy! earned an impressive $213,900. He recently finished in 11th place at the 2012 National Scrabble Championships after having spent most of the tournament in contention for the top spot. As moderator, Jason will be the event’s official time and score-keeper, and will be on hand to answer any questions about the game.

The Arc encourages people to come out and play a live game regardless of age or experience. Divisions include Junior, Timed/Untimed Newcomers and Rated (Expert). Last year, over 80 players attended, and this year promises even larger numbers, with cash and gift prizes will be given to winners of each division.

“The purpose of this event is two-fold”, said event coordinator Brett Colby. “Our primary goal is to raise funds for The Arc’s many services such as health care, employment and education, but we also want to encourage people to get off their smart phones and play this fantastic game with a real, live person!”

“No one should be frightened to play in public” added Jason Keller. “We are a non-judgmental group raising funds for a great cause.”

Advance registration and high profile sponsorships are available at www.arcofmonmouth.org/scrabble or by calling (732) 493-1919 ext. 120. Optional mail-in forms are available on the website or by emailing [email protected].
