Embratel - Empresa Brasileira de Telecomunicações S.A. is a second major Brazilian telecommunications company headquartered in Rio de Janeiro. The company was the long distance arm of Telebras until it was bought by the U.S. company MCI Communications for 2.65 billion reais during the 1998 break-up of Telebras. Embratel signs deal with Rio 2016 Olympics 11/2014 Embratel and Claro has acquired exclusive rights within the telecommunications category for the Games, with the sponsorship deal signed at the organising committee’s headquarters in Barra, Rio de Janeiro. Embratel is based in Rio while America Movil-owned Claro operates the largest mobile phone network in Latin America.
